Are you tired of the same old flashcard routine in your reading groups? Do you want to add a splash of excitement and fun to your lessons? Well, you’re in luck because I’ve got five fantastic ideas to make flashcard practice more engaging and enjoyable!
WHY FLASHCARDS ARE IMPORTANT
Repetition plays a crucial role in the process of orthographic mapping, which is the ability to form connections between sounds and letters, leading to fluent reading and spelling. Flashcards provide an excellent tool for facilitating this repetitive practice.
With flashcards, students can revisit and review the same words or word patterns over time, reinforcing their understanding of letter-sound relationships. The act of repeatedly engaging with flashcards helps solidify their orthographic mapping skills as they develop automaticity in decoding.
The more exposure students have to the words through repeated flashcard practice, the better equipped they become at recognizing and decoding them effortlessly. So, don’t underestimate the power of flashcards in fostering strong orthographic mapping skills in your reading groups!
FUN WAYS TO USE FLASHCARDS
Two Piles
Each student gets a stack of flashcards and two sticky notes – one with a happy face and the other with a “not sure” face. They place each card into the appropriate pile as they go through their flashcards.

The happy face pile is for the words they know, and the “not sure” pile is for those needing more practice. Once they’ve sorted their flashcards, students can take turns reading the words from their happy face pile to a partner or you.
For the “not sure” pile, you can model how to stretch out the words or choose a handful to practice together.
Tic Tac Toe, Flashcard Style!
Who said flashcards and games can’t go hand in hand? Grab a partner and get ready for some friendly competition! Each student receives nine flashcards and some objects to mark their spots on a tic-tac-toe grid.

Players take turns reading a word from their flashcards and then place their marker on a corresponding spot on the grid. The goal is to get three in a row. If a student misreads a word, their partner can kindly suggest they give it another try! The game goes by quickly, so you can reshuffle the cards or grab a fresh set to keep the fun going.
Let’s Play with Fluency Voices!
Time to bring out your inner actor! This idea works well with the “Two Piles” activity, individual word reading, or even group practice. Roll the dice with Fluency Voices and let the voices do the talking!

You can assign a specific voice to the whole group, or better yet, let each student choose a different voice for themselves. It could be a silly voice, a deep voice, or even a robot voice. The goal is to have fun and bring some variety to your flashcard practice!
Embrace the Digital World
Transform your flashcards into a digital format by displaying them on your interactive board, iPad, Chromebook, or any other device. You can take turns going around the group, with each student reading a word or have them read the cards together as a class. You can even mix it up and combine both approaches.

You can assign the digital flashcards to your students using platforms like Seesaw, Google Classroom, or any other classroom site you use. Embrace the digital age and take your flashcard practice to the next level!
Seesaw: Beyond Flashcards
Seesaw is a treasure trove for creative flashcard activities! Record videos of your students reading flashcards or have them take pictures of select flashcards and record themselves reading aloud.
